Wah 6 tahun! Doktor ke Engineer?
Straight to the point here. I’m shocked and upset! Very upset. Someone happened to ask me am I studying and how many years. So I answered six years. He then said "Jadi ape? Doktor ek? kat mane?" I answered no, before I can finish, as if with the greatest confidence as the sun will always rise in the east he said "Oh Engineer". Now that my breaking point. I looked directly in his eyes with, with my teeth clenched as if bittered hatred has fell before me "Tak! Cikgu..Cikgu Bahasa Inggeris, in a bit angry voice. "Oh" he not dared to say a word anymore. I’m sure this happened to most of you IPBArians when people first heard of what you are doing. Uii 6 tahun, macam doktor la pulak!
I’m used to it too, but personally I felt as if it is an insult (sorry guys, but in this blog i feel free to express my feelings and I’m not associating it with anyone). When I answered back ‘Cikgu Bahasa Inggeris’ I do it with the utmost pride in my heart, that I can be somebody and I’m doing something great. Just look at the common Malaysians English (esp Malays), you’ll understand. I’ve seen this during SBE so I dare to say it. If I can make those lads utter a sentence in English, my God! as if they are a totally new person.
Please, please, please!Help to change the society mentality towards teachers. Sure we are not paid as much as doctors and engineers, but we played a role in developing the core this nation, it’s manpower! Docs out there helped to maintain it in healthy state and Engineers build the infrastructure for it to operate. So it starts with us actually (now I don’t want a debate bout docs take care of childbirth, engineers build houses..so on and so on).
Now I’m not having grudges against my engineers and doctors friends(wajdi, ali, adli, arif n most of my MRSM school mates). I do not envy you guys for being what you are. But its not only u guys that studied hard and for a long period of time, us teachers too. Sure we English teachers do not have to calculate much, but theres a lot of theories to remember, lots of books to read, a lot of psychological use of the mind because humans are unpredictable machine. Our patients do not die when we make mistakes, it carries our mistakes thus it lives on long after we are gone.
So please, being a teacher as not as easy as it sounds like and give some respect for teachers too..not " Eleh jadi cikgu je, ape kelas"
Comments are welcomed…
True… I totally agree… I get the same situation with you as well… I guess students and people are not appreciating schools and taking them for granted. Should take away public education since people don’t appreciate it… Make them regret and at the same time schools get prestige…
totally true evrything u said up there…evry1 thinks that being a teacher is easy…well, maybe they shud get into a sch n teach n they will knw…neway dyau, don take this to ur heart o it will nt be resolved…nt anytime soon obviously…it’s hard to change society’s mentality against teachers out there!!!
Ya, i understand that feeling…i don’t know how this perverted mindset started?? I believe once upon a time, teachers were regarded more highly. Nevertheless, i do have high hopes for our batch of IPBA TESL-ians graduates. Even if it’s impossible to change the mindset of everyone, at least we can affect those who are with us/under our care.
As for those who thinks lowly of teaching, i think
1.they don’t know what they are talking about.
2. they are unfortunate enough to encounter bad teachers.
They can say whatever they want but i do think Malaysians are still in need of English teachers. Rather than criticising the poor standard of English among ourselves, or how some teachers nowadays are lacking of integrity, etc., at least we are in the front-line of making a difference. Even with the still existing weaknesses in my English, i’m still proud call myself a teacher-to-be.
im touched..
we have sumthing in common..
i felt the same way as well when ppl asked me ‘belajar kt mana?’..
guys,
i dont know where should i start, seems all points are taken
i agree with u guys and i’ve confronted with “this same” situation many times. but i’m used to it already and sometimes i feel tired aswering it. but never mind, i’m proud to be a teacher!!
yea,
not so long ago,
I quarelled with sumone over this topic.
I guess people really look down on us… (teachers).
The hell, I did blurt out sumthing…
and… he just, syyy’d out.
It felt good. haha.
damn good.
I know how pissed u were.
I agree with ya’ll….
‘proud to be a teacher.
i setuju.
a teacher
takes a hand
opens a mind
touches a heart
shapes the future
i love these words..and it reminds me again, and again why im passionate about this path ive chosen.
well dyau, that is a problem. But it’s good that u r passionate in wanting to teach.
as u said, the english standard in our country is in a worrying state.so it is a ‘thankless’ duty that u must do.pretty much like how a mom has to raise her children.most children dont appreciate n take for granted all that they get. so it most important to instill appreciation in students. i hope someday someone will come up with a good teaching method. maybe the great dyau will someday?
SO TRUE.
Nuff said.
oh..man…ipbarians r mostly the same right? haha, the public asked us tat question…it’s become a cliche now….n v answered discontentedly…well…let me share my point of view on this….i used 2 quarrel v my parents on this issue 2…the public stigma tat downgrade teachers as if its one of the lowest professions n the last choice 4 many….
well…i know it all 2 well..cos im a chinese male..very, very few chinese males opt 2 become teahcers….a handful…i repeat just a meagre figure…basically, if u go 2 schools, the guys r like ‘thorn among the roses’…
i used2 feel tat v should change this mindset of the public but its nt 4 us 2 say so….who r v 2 say this? haha, i hv even encountered many a time where people thought i would b teaching in uni or college level cos im obtaining overseas degree…when i said im going 2 teach in a primary sch, they were stunned, flabbergasted…..
there was also another occasion where a middle-aged man said tat wat made us different compared 2 locally-trained teachers? v draw the same pay, teach in the same sch n under the same system….haha, mayb these people r just oblivious, ignorant of the latest development in the teaching profession in Malaysia…i can tell u i hv a vast knowledge abt Malaysian education system, schs n teachers cos both my parents r blessed2 b teachers…
anyway, here comes the delightful part where there’s stil hope 4 Malaysian teachers….there r people who praised me, even doctors, accountants, lawyers n other professionals praised me…saying tat i hv chosen the right profession n its a noble job…now, many people realized tat governement jobs r more lucrative n secured…..let me say here tat many of those who laughed or frowned at us may nt hv a secured job, unemployed or can b retreched at anytime in their career….v, the government teachers r much luckier…v dont hv 2 go thru countless interviews2look 4 jobs n compete v others in this ever-globalised market…
so, guys…cheer up…its nt the end of the world…nt a bleak future…its just a start of better things 2 come in life. v r nt no-hopers, in fact, v r nation builders….i used2b dejected n demotivated but if u asked me now, im extremely contented n proud 2b who im now…my fellow frens were envious of me cos i hv the opportunity 2 go overseas….pls do read my blog abt CNY last year….thanks….all the best, teachers-to-be….
